The hospital is run by Koala Conservation Australia who rescues, treats, rehabilitates and cares for sick and injured koalas - 365 days a year.
The Koala Hospital welcomes visitors seven days a week with over 100,000 people passing through its doors every year. Many don’t realise that wild koalas are in crisis and could become extinct by as early as 2050.
At the Koala Hospital, you can take a guided or self-guided tour of the koala yards, see the koalas being treated in the hospital, and learn how to care for and conserve Australia's unique and precious wildlife. Visitors can also ‘adopt’ a koala that is unable to return safely to the wild, providing them with a lifetime of compassionate care.
Port Macquarie was named in 1818 by John Oxley after the Governor of NSW, Lachlan Macquarie.
The Traditional Custodians of Port Macquarie are the Birpai people, also spelt Biripi, Bripi, Biripai and Birrbay. Port Macquarie has long been known by the Birpai people as Guruk.
In 2024, the number of people living in Port Macquarie was recorded as 50,693.
