A Remarkable and Important Building

Sydney Opera House has significant cultural importance to the local Aboriginal people. It sits on Bennelong Point, a site known as ‘Tubowgule’ to the traditional Gadigal people.

The iconic building we see today is the result of an international design competition in 1957. Danish architect Jørn Utzon won from 233 submissions and became the chief architect.

The construction of the Sydney Opera House was originally planned to take four years and cost $7 million. The budget and timeframe both blew out famously. The project began in 1959 and took 14 years to complete at a final cost of a whopping $102 million.

One of the unique features of the Sydney Opera House is its sail-like roof. The 1,056,006 tiles were made by the Swedish company Höganäs and are remarkably self-cleaning! Another innovation is the building’s sustainable heating and cooling system, which uses seawater pumped directly from the Sydney Harbour.
