
Wellington Caves lie deep in the heart of New South Wales, just 45 minutes from Dubbo. There are wondrous displays of flowstone, cave coral and helictites, with Cathedral Cave showcasing its brilliant limestone and crystal formations. The main drawcard is the striking 15 metre high ‘Cathedral,’ an awe-inspiring structure of delicate crystals and formations.
The rich, complex geological history of the caves is brought to life by knowledgeable tour guides who share with visitors their fascinating insights into how these natural wonders were formed and their significance to the local Wiradjuri Aboriginal people. The Caves Visitor Experience Centre features a cafe and gift shop with a range of local gifts and souvenirs.


Just a short drive from Wellington Caves is the vibrant regional city of Dubbo, offering a diverse range of attractions including the world-class Taronga Western Plains Zoo. This large, open-range sanctuary is home to hundreds of rare and endangered animals including giraffes, elephants, rhinos and big cats.

The geological history of the Wellington Caves dates back 400 million years. The limestone formations were created over many millions of years and contain fossils dating back over one million years.
Visitors to Wellington Caves can see the history of the changing landscape in the Ancient Landscapes Gallery, which spans the 400-million-year timeline of the caves.
Thanks to the work by members of the Sydney University Speleological Society (SUSS) 26 caves have been mapped in the reserve, after new sections of caverns were discovered in the area.
Wellington is approximately 50 kilometres (a 35-to-45-minute drive) from Dubbo.
