The Iconic Tenterfield Saddler

A Historic Living Museum and Landmark

Immortalised by Australian Singer-Songwriter Peter Allen

The Tenterfield Saddler is a historic living museum and landmark in Tenterfield, NSW, made famous by Peter Allen's 1972 song ‘Tenterfield Saddler.’ The land was originally purchased by Sir Stuart Alexander Donaldson in 1858. The first saddler, Charles Pavel, bought the land in 1870, and the building later housed several other saddlers, most notably Peter Allen’s grandfather, George Woolnough.

However, Tenterfield Saddler is much more than a song. From 1908 to 1960, this quaint blue-granite saddlery was a key meeting place in town. Over its lifetime, the building was a saddlery, bank, and residence, and was maintained by volunteers as a museum featuring historical tools, leather goods and a glimpse into the working conditions of a bygone era.
