The Port Macquarie Koala Hospital is a special place. This world-renowned facility rescues, treats, and rehabilitates sick and injured koalas that have been affected by bushfires, disease, accidents or urban development. The hospital generously opens its doors to visitors, offering a unique and heartwarming opportunity to see Australia’s beloved koalas up close.
Education is a big part of their mission. On a guided tour of the Koala Hospital, Port Macquarie, visitors hear incredible rescue stories, learn about koala conservation and see the koalas recovering in their natural enclosures. There’s an on-site museum and gift shop with all proceeds going toward koala care and habitat protection.
A visit to the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital is not just a memorable experience, it supports vital conservation work and helps secure a future for one of Australia’s most iconic animals. Following the devastating Black Summer Bushfires, generous donations helped the hospital realise their goal of building a Wild Koala Breeding Program and Visitor Centre in Cowarra State Forest.
This wonderful centre was named 'Guulabaa', which means 'Place of the Koala' in the local Gathang language. At Koala Conservation Wild Breeding Visitor Centre at Guulabaa - Place of Koala, visitors can wander through the koala yards and observe the resident koalas from viewing decks.
Enjoy the interactive, educational koala experience, learn about the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital's mission to save koalas, and the Wild Koala Breeding program and watch and learn as the carers prepare koala food. There’s also a koala clinic, where visitors can see the amazing koala care in action.

Port Macquarie has one of the highest koala populations on the East Coast and sadly, wild koalas are in crisis and could become extinct by 2050. The famous Port Macquarie Koala Hospital is the first of its kind in the country and cares for koalas 365 days a year. The facility is run by Koala Conservation Australia with a small team of dedicated experts and generous volunteers.
The Koala Hospital welcomes visitors seven days a week and over 100,000 people pass through its doors every year. Visitors can ‘adopt’ a koala that is unable to return safely to the wild, providing them with a lifetime of care.
At Guulabaa - Place of Koala centre, visitors are welcomed by The Big Koala, a 2.5-metre mural, part of the award-winning Hello Koalas Sculpture Trail. Follow the path to The Hub, a series of decks leading into the forest canopy and some incredible views.
Visitors have the option of taking a self-guided tour through the grounds to see the recovering koalas in their outdoor enclosures and learn about their rescue stories. Helpful volunteers are always available to answer questions and share information about koala behaviour, care, threats and conservation.
For visitors wanting a more in-depth experience, guided tours are available. These tours provide guests with a behind-the-scenes look at the hospital and access to other areas.
The holding of wild koalas is not permitted in NSW. The koalas being cared for at Port Macquarie Koala Hospital have been rescued due to illnesses, injuries or trauma. It’s important to keep human interaction at a minimum to reduce stress and allow the koala to remain wild, giving them the best chance of rehabilitation and release.
Yes! Koalaseum is a small museum featuring educational displays about koalas, their habitats, and the challenges they face in the wild.
There’s also a gift shop selling eco-friendly products and merchandise, with all proceeds supporting koala care and restoration of their habitat.
Yes! Koala Conservation Australia in partnership with Taronga Conservation Society and the Australian Museum runs the world's first Wild Koala Breeding Facility, operating out of Guulabaa. These koala breeding yards cannot be accessed by visitors as the aim is to keep the koalas as close to their wild habitat as possible.
