A Rich and Fascinating History

Coffs Harbour has a rich history dating back thousands of years that’s well worth exploring. The Coffs Harbour and surrounding area was originally inhabited by the Gumbaynggirr Aboriginal people. Skilled hunters and gatherers, the Gumbaynggirr lived well off the fertile land and abundant sea. A strong local population still carries through and celebrates this ancient culture and its traditions.

With European settlement in the 1800s came farming and milling. The timber industry was especially significant to the region with Coffs Harbour becoming a major production centre. Over recent decades, tourism has become an important industry with tourists flocking to the beaches, rainforests and waterfalls to enjoy a host of activities and adventures.

Coffs Harbour was once part of a region known as the Banana Coast. Today, Coffs Harbour is one of the largest urban areas on the north coast of New South Wales and is part of a wider region known as the Coffs Coast.

The World’s Largest Banana Statue

John and Betty Landi came up with the Big Banana idea as a way of attracting passing traffic to stop at their small, roadside banana stall. Local engineer, Alan Chapman was tasked with designing the giant banana and builder Alan Harvey began construction in September 1964. The world’s biggest banana was officially opened on December 22 and at 13 metres long became Australia’s first ‘big thing.’

Not long after the opening, John and Stella Enevoldson joined the partnership and the enterprise was expanded by adding 20 more banana plantation acres, a shop, cafe and an extended car park.

John and Betty retired in 1968 and John and Stella continued to grow the business until 1988 when it was sold to Horticulture World, part-owned by local businessman Bob Johnston. The Big Banana underwent a $30 million fun park redevelopment and continues to be a popular attraction for visitors heading for a holiday in Coffs Harbour.
