In Lightning Ridge, at the edge of outback NSW, is the Australian Opal Centre. This extraordinary national museum aims to preserve, display and research the greatest ever public collection of Australian Opal, precious opalised fossils from the Age of Dinosaurs and share the colourful history and heritage of the Australian Opal Fields.
The Australian Opal Centre is a must-visit destination for anyone seeking a unique Australian experience. More than just a museum, this underground facility is a celebration of the world’s rarest gemstone - the black opal - as Lightning Ridge and the surrounding region are the world’s leading source of this beautiful and rare gemstone.
The Australian Opal Centre offers visitors the chance to dive into the colourful world of opals, right where they’re found. Lightning Ridge is home to the most valuable black opals on Earth, and the Centre holds one of the world’s greatest collections of these dazzling stones.
Visitors are fascinated by the displays of opalised fossils, rare specimens, and jewellery that captures the vivid colours of the outback sky. The Australian Opal Centre is also a place to get hands-on. Visitors love to try their hand at fossicking, and it certainly gives them a sense of the rugged conditions miners have faced since first discovering these impressive opals.
It’s a place dedicated to the knowledge, education, and exploration of the Australian opal, and the extraordinary people and landscape that produce it, where visitors hear stories of the rugged miners and adventurous seekers who have shaped the eccentric charm of Lightning Ridge.

Sitting on Yuwaalaraay Country, the Australian Opal Centre also highlights Aboriginal cultural connections to the land and stone, providing a deeper understanding of this rich and remote region. Visitors learn how opals form in the desert earth, with a particular focus on the black opals for which Lightning Ridge is famous.
Currently housed in a temporary facility, the centre boasts the world's leading collection of opalised fossils and is building a magnificent collection of precious opal, cultural artefacts, artworks, photographs, archival and research materials.
A new two-storey, energy-efficient underground facility is being built to house these collections. It promises to be an extraordinary national monument to the Australian opal.
Whether you're a gemstone lover, fossil enthusiast, or curious traveller, a visit to the Australian Opal Centre offers a sparkling window into the geology, history, and soul of Lightning Ridge, and a perfect excuse to explore one of the country’s most colourful outback towns.
At the AOC showroom, visitors can see rare fossils made of opal from the Age of the Dinosaurs, learn about the world of opal mining and how to cut and polish an opal and even give fossicking a go!
The Australian Opal Centre gift shop is filled with unique stones, jewellery, souvenirs and ‘Russ,’ the resident Muttaburrasaurus! The AOC is also the home of ‘SPARK’ - an outdoor cinema experience.
SPARK is the AOC’s cinema under the stars experience and runs from Easter until early October. It’s a vibrant, cinematic celebration of Lightning Ridge, highlighting what makes the town so special.
Created by acclaimed cinematographer, director and editor Martin Fox and sound artist Vic McEwan, as well as local artists and dozens of residents, the SPARK cinema experience is about the land, the people, the opal and life on Yuwaalaraay country at Lightning Ridge.
Black opals are rare due to their complex formation process and the limited number of deposits. Lightning Ridge opals are special due to the region's unique geology, which produces a dark body tone that enhances the vibrant colours in the opals.
This combination creates a striking contrast and a more intense, brilliant appearance, especially in the rare and highly valued black opals found in the area.
