The Historic Silverton Hotel

Broken Hill’s Famous Outback Pub

A Must-Visit Tourist Destination

Silverton Hotel is a historic icon in Silverton, a short drive from Broken Hill. Established in 1884 during the silver mining boom, the hotel was the birthplace of the Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited (BHP) in 1885. The original building was destroyed by fire and was replaced in 1918 by the current hotel, located in the centre of this small, dusty outback town.

In more recent decades, Silverton Hotel has claimed a place in Australian film-making history as one of the most filmed and photographed hotels in the country. It has featured in dozens of films, TV shows and advertisements, most famously Mad Max ll, Razorback, A Town Like Alice, Dirty Deeds, The Craig, Mission: Impossible II and Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert.

History of the Iconic Silverton Hotel

Nestled in the outback of New South Wales, the Silverton Hotel is a timeless icon of Australian history and hospitality. Originally built in 1884 by John de Baun to serve the booming mining town, it quickly became a social hub for miners and travellers. A two-storey version followed in 1885, but after a fire in 1918, the former post office became the hotel that proudly stands today.

The ruins of the original hotel remain beside the current building—fittingly, the birthplace of BHP Billiton. A copy of the company’s incorporation still hangs inside. Though the mining industry has faded, the Silverton Hotel thrives, now famous as a film location since Wake in Fright was filmed there in 1970.

Current owners Peter and Patsy Price welcome visitors with hearty meals, cold drinks, and rich storytelling. With awards for tourism and outback spirit, the hotel remains a community hub, a film industry mainstay and a symbol of Silverton’s enduring character.

Silverton’s Role in the Film Industry

The film industry has become an integral part of Silverton and Broken Hill since the first movie was filmed at the Silverton Hotel in 1970. Yet ask any local exactly how many films have been made in the local area, and you’ll receive a variety of answers. It appears nobody knows for sure.

Most locals had a walk-on role in Mad Max II, which was filmed in and around the city in 1981, and a replica of Mad Max’s V8 Interceptor takes pride of place at Silverton’s Mad Max Museum. Take a drive and you’ll still see the odd movie sets dotted throughout the Mundi Mundi Plains.

It’s Silverton’s unique landscape that continues to interest filmmakers from around the world, and a television commercial is shot in Silverton every few months. Too many to list, they’ve included Land Rover, Telstra, Coca-Cola, Dove Soap, Hyundai, Pajero, Ampol, Smiths Chips, Gatorade, Pepsi, and Master Card.
