While exploring the rich culture of Broken Hill, a visit to Pro Hart Gallery promises an inspiring and unforgettable experience. Pro Hart was an internationally renowned artist known for his portrayals of working-class Aussies and outback life.
Born in Broken Hill in 1928, Kevin ‘Pro’ Hart grew up on a nearby sheep station and was illustrating his school essays by the age of seven. He went on to work 12-hour shifts in the mines, while at night he painted, created and tinkered.
The name ‘Pro’ came from his mining mates, who dubbed him the ‘Mad Professor’ as he was always inventing something. Over time, ‘Professor’ was shortened to ‘Pro’ and the name stuck.
Pro Hart is famously known as one of Australia's iconic outback artists, but there was much more to his talent. He sculpted in metal and stone, and his legacy includes a wide range of drawings, etchings and sculptures.

Pro Hart Art Gallery in the heart of Broken Hill offers visitors a fabulous opportunity to learn about this famous artist’s fascinating life. Pro Hart was a painter, a father, a husband, a man who travelled the world, but chose to live in the place he loved - Broken Hill.
He painted almost every day and his work graced the homes of royalty, movie stars and politicians. At times, however, Pro Hart was criticised by the ‘art elite’ for his unconventional approach, such as firing paint from a cannon! Despite his critics, his popularity and sales continued to grow.
Pro Hart developed motor neurone disease and was unable to paint for the last six months of his life. He died on 28 March 2006. A large state funeral was held for him in Broken Hill.
