
Deep in the heart of central NSW lies the town of Cobar. Once Australia's largest copper producer, Cobar is still known as ‘Copper City. The Great Cobar Museum and Heritage Centre is housed in the former administration building (circa 1910-1912) of the Great Cobar Copper Mine. The museum offers a compelling journey through the region’s Aboriginal heritage, mining and pastoral history, and the lives of early settlers.
Extensive restoration on the grand old building was completed in 2021. It’s home to the Great Cobar Museum, Great Cobar Heritage Centre and Cobar Visitor’s and Information Centre. Exhibits include interactive displays, historic photographs, mining equipment, a model woolshed, and the opportunity to operate the controls of a massive excavator. Visitors can view machinery, the open‑cut quarry lake and other remnants of mining infrastructure.
Step into the heart of outback history at the Great Cobar Heritage Centre, a fascinating place to visit when passing through this old mining town. Housed in the beautifully restored 1910 administration building of the former Great Cobar Copper Mine, the Heritage Centre is a striking piece of history.
The comprehensive exhibitions were completely redesigned in 2021 to include Cobar’s heritage from 1869 to the present day. Visitors can explore fascinating collections that span from early Ngiyampaa Aboriginal culture to the rise of mining and pastoral industries.
One special highlight is the ‘Long Time Comin’ exhibit, which brings the ancient Mt Grenfell rock art caves to life, offering insight into the rich cultural traditions of the Ngiyampaa people.
Outside the centre, take in the spectacular view of Cobar’s first open-cut mine, now a serene lake formed by the rising water table, its colourful rock faces changing with the light.

Cobar is proud to be the home of the Royal Far West Health Scheme, still operating today. A restored Baby Health Clinic railway carriage is part of the extensive outdoor displays at the Great Cobar Museum.

The Great Cobar Copper Mine, the CSA Mine, the Peak Gold Mine and the New Occidental Mine all feature in the comprehensive mining displays at the Great Cobar Heritage Centre. The primary feature, though, is the Great Cobar Copper Mine, as it's housed in the former offices of that historic operation and focuses on its role as a leading copper producer and one of the world's largest 19th-century mines.
