Cairns Aquarium is one of Australia's most spectacular aquariums. The iconic, three-level landmark in the heart of Cairns in Tropical North Queensland is an exciting, world-class venue highlighting the animals, plants, and habitats. It is found only in Australia’s Wet Tropics, a region that borders two World Heritage Sites: The Great Barrier Reef and The Daintree Rainforest.
It’s a place you’ll want to take your time exploring as there’s much to discover. You’ll learn about the sensitive ecosystems that exist in the rainforests and coral reefs of the tropical north, including diverse marine life and exotic land species. Cairns Aquarium allows you to catch a glimpse of some of the world's most elusive creatures… while staying dry!
Your journey starts in the freshwater streams and rivers where you’ll venture through waterfalls, past ancient volcanic crater lakes, and river systems, and into flooded billabongs, without getting wet! Along the way, you’ll encounter curious creatures like the pig-nosed turtle, freshwater moray eels, catfish, stonefish, crayfish, and stingrays.
Drift through the calm waters of the Wet Tropics Rainforest and meet the swamp-dwelling animals and wildlife hidden amongst the rainforest floor, including Johnston’s crocodile, mangrove monitor, white lip tree frogs, turtles, tarantula, and giant burrowing cockroaches!
Heading toward the coast through mangrove trees, you might be lucky to see natural nurseries filled with baby fish. You’ll also find estuarine crocodiles, giant mud crabs, and quaint upside-down jellyfish.
Your next destination, The Great Barrier Reef. From the shallow rock pools, you delve into deeper waters to find brilliantly coloured reef fish before encountering the deadly, ‘Dangers of the Reef’ species. You’ll come close to a wide array of fish, sharks, jellyfish, sea snakes, the infamous crown-of-thorn starfish, stonefish, sea cucumbers, and even tiny seahorses.
Finally, you arrive in the open ocean of the Coral Sea. In this stretch of the Southwest Pacific, you’ll be greeted by a wide diversity of oceanic creatures such as sharks, rays, giant grouper, trevally, and coral trout.
