Creswick - In West-Central Victoria

A Well-Preserved Gold Mining Town

As Beautiful as It Is Historic

Creswick is a historic former gold-mining town one and a half hours out of Melbourne between Ballarat and Daylesford. Originally known as Creswick's Creek, after Charles, Henry and John Creswick who squatted in the district with their sheep in 1842. Gold was first discovered at Creswick in 1851 and a rush occurred the following year and again in 1855.

The Victorian School of Forestry opened in Creswick in 1910 and pine and eucalyptus plantations were created which now surround the town creating a beautiful environment. Creswick offers many natural attractions and activities such as bushwalking and scenic drives through Creswick Regional Park. The town bears the legacy of the gold mining era with many historic buildings.

Home to a Famous Artistic Family

Creswick is a fascinating place to explore with its beautiful old historic buildings lining the streets of town. A much-photographed landmark is an ornate bandstand that has seen a lot of activity since it was built in 1897. Worth a visit are the former Bank of New South Wales building dating back to 1861, the Post Office, built in 1862 and the former Town Hall from 1876 which now houses the Creswick Museum.

Creswick is the birthplace of the artistic Lindsay family of five siblings - Percy, Lionel, Norman, Ruby and Daryl - whose professional artistic influence spanned the period from the 1890s to the 1960s and 1970s.

Notably, Norman Lindsay was an artist, sculptor, etcher, cartoonist, sculptor, art critic, writer and novelist, who went on to become one of the most prolific and popular Australian artists of his generation. The nearby Ballarat Gallery has a large collection of Lindsay artworks, and the Creswick Museum features a small collection of work by Lionel and Daryl.

Many Wonderful Places to Visit

The town of Creswick is known not only for its gold mining history and famous artists, but also for its walking tracks, bike trails, friendly pubs, restaurants and cafes.

One of the popular attractions is the Creswick Woollen Mills, established in 1947. Still owned and run by the founder’s family, it’s the last remaining coloured spinning mill of its kind in Australia. Creswick Woollen Mills produces the most attractive, quality products such as blankets, homewares, clothing and accessories all made from natural fibre.

Another spot to visit is Calambeen Park, Creswick’s former Chinese camp. This lovely area now features lakes that are perfect for swimming and attract fishing enthusiasts.

Park Lake Botanical Reserve is a pretty, 15-hectare hilltop park established in Creswick in 1860. The park features an ornamental lake, and playground, BBQ facilities, outdoor tennis and walking tracks that take visitors through the historic gardens and around the lovely lake.
