The Willie Creek Pearls story is an interesting one. The Banfield family moved to Broome in 1989, when Lord McAlpine, a British investor, author, and raconteur was transforming the town from a remote coastal town and pearling centre into a modern tourist destination.
The Banfields bought Broome Buslines and over many years grew it into a successful tour company offering coach tours throughout the Kimberley region. One of their tour destinations was Willie Creek Pearl Farm which they eventually bought.
With the courageous attitude inherent in pearl farmers of the past, the Banfield family have grown Willie Creek Pearls into an award-winning multi-purpose facility. Their inspiring, modern pearl farm welcomes thousands of visitors a year to discover the history and mystery of Western Australia’s fascinating pearling industry.
Willie Creek Pearl Farm has become one of the most awarded tourist attractions in Western Australia, a testament to the Banfield family’s dedication and hard work. The business has been inducted into the WA Tourism Hall of Fame three times as well as twice receiving the top WA Tourism accolade, the Sir David Brand Award.
The Willie Creek Pearl Farm Tour of their modern commercial operation is an entertaining, educational, and memorable experience that provides an enthralling insight into the unique story behind the Pearl of Western Australia.

Willie Creek Pearl Farm Tours show visitors the complete process of commercial pearling from shell to showroom. From their purpose-built oyster nursery, a boat ride on the beautiful turquoise waters and back to the showroom to see how the harvested pearl is crafted into stunning jewellery.
The tour duration is around three hours, or five if you opt to catch the coach or stay for lunch.
Located on-site is the Pearl Luggers Museum which takes visitors through 150 years of unique maritime and pearling stories and showcasing valuable and rare diving, pearling and mother of pearl artifacts. The museum honours the daring men and women of the pearling industry who lived a fortune seeker’s life of exploration, danger and adventure.
