Katherine’s Iconic Nitmiluk Gorge

Thirteen gorges in one unforgettable journey

Cruise through ancient sandstone gorge country

Visiting the Nitmiluk Gorge, you quickly understand why this is one of the Northern Territory’s most remarkable landscapes. The Katherine River has carved 13 interconnected gorges through sandstone that dates back more than 1.6 billion years, creating sheer cliffs that rise over 100 metres above the water. Known to the Jawoyn people as Nitmiluk, meaning “Place of the Cicada Dreaming,” this is a living cultural country as much as it is a geological wonder.

Today, Nitmiluk Gorge forms the heart of Nitmiluk National Park in the Northern Territory, co-managed with the Jawoyn Traditional Owners since 1989. During the dry season, calm waters make boat cruises and gentle walks especially enjoyable for active travellers over 50, while the wet season reshapes the gorge system with powerful floods.

Each gorge reveals a different landscape

What surprises many travellers is how different each section of Nitmiluk Gorge feels. Some gorges open wide with sweeping river bends and glowing ochre cliffs, while others narrow into quiet sandstone corridors where reflections ripple beneath towering walls.

These relaxed Northern Territory holidays are designed for active seniors who value comfort, cultural insight and time to truly absorb Australia’s ancient landscapes.

Thirteen gorges in one unforgettable journey

A cultural cruise through Jawoyn country

A scenic cruise through Nitmiluk Gorge is best enjoyed in the dry season from May to September, when calm waters allow access to multiple gorges and temperatures are mild. Expect towering sandstone walls, quiet river reflections and expert commentary on Jawoyn culture.

As part of Nitmiluk National Park scenic tours, a visit to the gorge is a highlight for many travellers. Beyond cruising, the park also offers lookout walks, rock art sites and access to the Jatbula Trail.
