Can you swim at Karumba?

While Karumba is renowned for its beautiful coastal scenery, swimming in the open waters isn't generally recommended due to saltwater crocodiles and marine stingers. For those looking to cool off, the Karumba swimming pool is a safe and refreshing option. The main reason swimming in the Gulf of Carpentaria near Karumba isn't advised is the presence of saltwater crocodiles, also known as 'salties.' Saltwater crocodiles are territorial and can pose a significant risk to swimmers. 

Marine stingers, such as jellyfish and Irukandji, are another reason why swimming in the open waters around Karumba is not recommended, particularly during the warmer months (October to May). These tiny creatures can deliver painful and sometimes dangerous stings. While stinger suits can offer some protection, the safest option is still to avoid swimming in the open water during stinger season.
