Auckland’s charm and cultural treasures

Auckland, known as the "City of Sails," is more than just a gateway to New Zealand — it’s a city that surprises you at every turn. With its sparkling harbours, vibrant culture, and nearby natural wonders, it’s the kind of place where you could lose yourself for days. There’s an energy here that feels both cosmopolitan and relaxed, making it the perfect start to any adventure.

Lose yourself among the giants at Parry Kauri Park

Visiting Parry Kauri Park feels like entering a sacred space where nature reigns supreme. The towering Kauri trees, some of the largest and oldest in New Zealand, stand as silent sentinels of time, their immense trunks and spreading branches inspiring awe. There’s something deeply humbling about standing beneath these ancient giants, their history rooted in the very soil of this remarkable country.

As you stroll through the peaceful trails, you’ll notice the air seems fresher, the forest alive with birdsong. For me, this was a moment of quiet reflection — a chance to connect with the natural beauty that makes NZ so extraordinary. It’s a gentle yet powerful start to your journey.

Step into history at the Waitangi Treaty Grounds

A visit to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds is both enlightening and deeply moving. This historic site, where the treaty between the Māori tribes and the British Crown was signed, offers an intimate glimpse into New Zealand’s rich and sometimes turbulent history. Walking the grounds, you can almost feel the echoes of the momentous events that took place here.

The guided New Zealand tour is captivating, bringing the story to life with personal anecdotes and insights. The beauty of the bay as a backdrop adds a sense of serenity to the experience. For me, the highlight was stepping inside the intricately carved meeting house — a masterpiece of Māori artistry that speaks of resilience and heritage.

Savour the view at Auckland’s Orbit Revolving Restaurant

Returning to Auckland’s North Shore offers the perfect chance to unwind after a day of exploration. With its relaxed vibe and picturesque views, it’s a spot where you can let the pace of the city wash over you. I loved wandering along the shoreline, watching the sunlight dance on the water and taking in the gentle hum of life here.

The evening, however, is a true highlight. Dining at the Orbit Revolving Restaurant is an experience like no other. As the city lights begin to twinkle, the restaurant slowly turns, offering panoramic views of Auckland Harbour and beyond. The food is exquisite, but it’s the combination of the view and the atmosphere that leaves you spellbound. It’s the perfect way to toast the start of your New Zealand adventure.

The stunning Bay of Islands

The Bay of Islands is a slice of paradise that feels like it was made for exploring — pure New Zealand. With its sparkling blue waters, lush green islands, and an air of tranquillity, it’s a place where you can truly slow down and soak up the beauty of New Zealand’s coastline. Whether you’re cruising between islands or relaxing on a quiet beach, the Bay of Islands offers an unforgettable experience.

Cruise through paradise in the Bay of Islands

Exploring the Bay of Islands by boat is like stepping into a dream. The water glistens as the boat glides past secluded coves and emerald-green islands, each one more beautiful than the last. The famous Hole in the Rock is a real highlight — sailing through its natural archway feels like venturing into a secret world.

What I loved most about the cruise was the sense of discovery. Stopping at one of the islands for a stroll or a quiet moment to take it all in was magical. The stillness of the water, the call of seabirds — it’s a scene that stays with you long after the journey ends.

Share the waters with playful dolphins

The Bay of Islands is teeming with marine life, and spotting dolphins in their natural habitat is nothing short of exhilarating. Whether it’s playful bottlenose dolphins riding the bow wave or the more elusive common dolphins darting in the distance, every sighting feels like a gift from the sea.

I’ll never forget the moment a pod of dolphins surfaced right beside the boat. Watching them leap and splash so effortlessly was a reminder of the joy and freedom of nature. It’s impossible not to feel a sense of awe when you see these incredible creatures in the wild — it’s one of those moments that makes you feel truly alive.

The magic of Rotorua

Rotorua is a place where the earth seems alive, with bubbling mud pools, steaming geysers, and the unmistakable scent of sulphur in the air. It’s not just the geothermal activity that makes this destination special — Rotorua is also rich in Māori culture, offering an immersive experience of New Zealand’s traditions and heritage.

Discover the magic of Middle-earth at Hobbiton

A visit to Hobbiton is pure enchantment. Nestled in the rolling hills of Matamata, this iconic movie set feels like stepping straight into Middle-earth. The brightly coloured hobbit holes, lush gardens, and the charming Green Dragon Inn make it easy to lose yourself in the magic of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.

What makes Hobbiton even more special is the attention to detail. Every prop, every corner of the set, tells a story. I remember sipping a cold ale at the Green Dragon and marvelling at how authentic it all felt. It’s an unforgettable stop that sparks the imagination and leaves you grinning from ear to ear.

Feel the thrill of Rotorua’s Agrodome and luge rides

Rotorua’s charm doesn’t end with its geothermal wonders. A visit to the Agrodome offers a delightful slice of Kiwi farming life, with entertaining sheep-shearing demonstrations and adorable farm animals that will win your heart. It’s fun, light-hearted, and gives a glimpse into rural New Zealand.

Skyline Rotorua, on the other hand, is all about thrill and scenery. The luge ride is pure joy — an exciting way to race down the hill with panoramic views of Rotorua below. I couldn’t resist riding more than once, laughing all the way down and soaking in the beauty of the landscape around me.

Immerse yourself in the culture and wonders of Te Puia

Te Puia is where Rotorua’s geothermal wonders and Māori culture come together. Walking through the geothermal valley, you’ll see the awe-inspiring Pohutu Geyser erupting into the sky and marvel at the bubbling mud pools. It’s a sight that reminds you of the raw power of nature.

The Te Po experience in the evening is something truly special. As the sun sets, you’ll gather for a traditional hāngī feast, cooked underground using geothermal heat. The storytelling and cultural performances bring the Māori culture to life in a way that’s both entertaining and deeply moving. For me, it was a moment of connection — learning about the traditions and stories of the land left a lasting impression on my heart.

The beauty of Lake Taupo

Lake Taupo is a serene paradise in the heart of the North Island, formed in the caldera of an ancient volcanic eruption. With its crystal-clear waters, breathtaking mountain views, and peaceful atmosphere, it’s a destination that invites you to pause and take it all in. This is a place where nature’s power and tranquillity exist in perfect harmony.

Take the scenic route along the Thermal Explorer Highway

The journey to Lake Taupo along the Thermal Explorer Highway is an adventure in itself. This scenic route winds through geothermal landscapes, offering dramatic sights like the thundering Huka Falls. The sheer power of the falls is mesmerising as the Waikato River forces its way through a narrow gorge and plunges into a brilliant blue pool below.

Driving this highway feels like uncovering a series of natural treasures. Every stop has its own charm, and the landscapes seem to shift and change with every kilometre. For me, the beauty of this drive lies in its contrasts — calm, rolling hills one moment and awe-inspiring geothermal wonders the next.

Marvel at the rugged beauty of Tongariro National Park

As you approach Lake Taupo, the majesty of Tongariro National Park comes into view. This UNESCO World Heritage site is home to three volcanic peaks — Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe, and Tongariro — that dominate the horizon. It’s a landscape that feels otherworldly, with its rugged terrain, emerald lakes, and snow-dusted peaks.

Passing through the park is a journey into New Zealand’s wild heart. I remember pulling over to take in the view of Mount Ngauruhoe, also known as Mount Doom in The Lord of the Rings. The scale and beauty of it were humbling. Whether you’re a keen walker or prefer to enjoy the scenery from a distance, Tongariro National Park is a highlight of any trip to this region.

The charm of Wellington

Wellington, New Zealand’s capital, is a city that blends vibrant creativity with natural beauty. Nestled between a sparkling harbour and rolling green hills, it’s compact yet full of character, with something new you’ll discover around every corner. From its rich history to its buzzing café culture, Wellington is a destination that invites you to dive in and make it your own.

Uncover the heart of the capital with a city tour

Exploring Wellington’s city highlights feels like stepping into the heart of New Zealand’s story. The Wellington Tramway Museum is a delightful nod to the city’s past, where you can learn about the heritage of this iconic mode of transport. As you wander through the streets, you’ll notice how history and modernity intertwine, with sleek architecture sitting side by side with lovingly preserved landmarks.

What I loved most was the vibrancy of it all — street performers, bustling markets, and the hum of the waterfront. Everywhere you turn, there’s something to see, do, or taste. Strolling along the harbour with a coffee in hand, watching the ferries come and go, was a perfect way to soak in the city’s relaxed energy.

Step into New Zealand’s stories at Te Papa Museum

Te Papa, New Zealand’s national museum, is a treasure trove of stories that capture the soul of the country. From Māori culture to European settlement, its exhibits weave together the rich tapestry of New Zealand’s history and identity. The museum’s interactive displays and thoughtful storytelling make it engaging and accessible for everyone.

For me, the highlight was the Gallipoli exhibition, where larger-than-life sculptures brought the stories of soldiers to life in a deeply moving way. Walking through Te Papa feels like a journey across time and culture, and it left me with a deeper understanding and appreciation of this incredible country.

The timeless appeal of Christchurch

If you’re aiming for New Zealand’s South Island, you simply must visit Christchurch. It’s a place of renewal and resilience. With its English charm, vibrant art scene, and sprawling gardens, it’s a city that feels both steeped in history and wonderfully fresh. Exploring Christchurch is like stepping into a living canvas, where every street and park tells a story of beauty and reinvention.

Sail through the stunning Marlborough Sounds

The journey to Christchurch begins with a magical crossing on the Interislander Ferry, one of the most scenic ferry rides in the world. As you glide through the sparkling waters of the Marlborough Sounds, you’re treated to views of lush, forested hills and tranquil bays. It’s the kind of journey where you’ll want to keep your camera handy at every turn.

For me, this crossing felt like the perfect way to transition from the North to the South Island. There’s a sense of adventure as you watch the landscapes unfold before you, knowing that even more wonders await on the other side.

Ride the rails on the Coastal Pacific journey

Arriving in Picton, the next leg of the journey takes you aboard the Coastal Pacific, a rail journey that showcases the Kaikoura mountain ranges in all their glory. The train hugs the coastline, offering panoramic views of rugged cliffs, rolling surf, and the majestic mountains beyond.

I found this journey utterly mesmerising. There’s something special about travelling by train — watching the scenery shift as you relax in comfort. With every kilometre, the South Island’s beauty reveals itself in new and stunning ways.

Experience the charm and discovery of Christchurch

Once in Christchurch, the city itself is a joy to explore. From the poignant Earthquake Memorial to the Arts Centre and the charming Bridge of Remembrance, it’s a city that wears its history with pride. The gardens are exquisite, with bursts of colour and fragrance that feel like a sanctuary in the heart of the city.

A visit to the International Antarctic Centre is a must, offering a fascinating glimpse into life on the frozen continent. From interactive exhibits to simulated blizzards, it’s an experience that’s both educational and thrilling. For me, it was a reminder of Christchurch’s unique role as a gateway to Antarctica — a testament to the city’s adventurous spirit.

The wonders of Franz Josef Glacier

Franz Josef Glacier is a destination that feels like stepping into another world. Nestled amidst lush rainforest and rugged peaks, this natural wonder is one of New Zealand’s most awe-inspiring sights. Whether you’re admiring it from afar or venturing closer, the glacier’s sheer scale and beauty leave a lasting impression.

Traverse the Alps aboard the TranzAlpine train

The journey to Franz Josef begins aboard the TranzAlpine, one of the world’s most spectacular train rides. As the train winds its way through the Southern Alps, you’ll pass over soaring viaducts, deep river valleys, and dramatic gorges. The views from the large windows are nothing short of breathtaking — a constantly changing panorama of pristine wilderness.

For me, this train ride was pure magic. There’s something about the steady rhythm of the rails and the grandeur of the landscape that feels both relaxing and exhilarating. It’s the perfect way to ease into the natural beauty of the South Island.

Touch the sky with a scenic flight over Franz Josef

Once at Franz Josef, you have the incredible opportunity to see the glacier from above with a scenic flight. Weather permitting, this adventure takes you soaring over the icy expanse, offering unparalleled views of the glacier’s shimmering surface and the jagged peaks surrounding it. For an extra thrill, you can even land on the snow — a moment that feels like touching the sky.

I’ll never forget the feeling of stepping out onto the snow during the flight. The air was crisp and cold, and the silence was profound, broken only by the crunch of boots on ice. It’s an experience that’s as close to otherworldly as you can get without leaving Earth.

The magic of Queenstown

Queenstown is a place that seems almost too beautiful to be real. Nestled on the shores of Lake Wakatipu and surrounded by the towering peaks of the Southern Alps, it’s a town that effortlessly combines natural splendour with endless opportunities for adventure. Whether you’re seeking thrills or quiet moments of reflection, Queenstown has something for everyone.

Make Queenstown your playground

Queenstown is a town that rewards exploration, and having a free day here is a gift. You can wander along the lake’s edge, where the water shimmers like a sheet of glass, reflecting the mountains above. The town itself is charming, with its boutique shops, inviting cafés, and vibrant atmosphere.

When I visited, I took the time to sit by the lake with a coffee, just soaking in the scenery. It’s the kind of place where even doing nothing feels extraordinary because the beauty around you is so captivating.

But here’s the thing — it’s not all bucolic serenity. Whether you want to ski the slopes of Coronet Peak or The Remarkables, or raft or go kayaking on the Shotover and Kawarau rivers, there’s plenty of adventure to be had.

Relive the past aboard the TSS Earnslaw steamship

An evening aboard the vintage steamship TSS Earnslaw is a highlight of any visit to Queenstown. As the ship glides across Lake Wakatipu, you’ll be treated to stunning views of the surrounding mountains, their peaks tinged with the warm hues of sunset. The experience feels like stepping back in time, with the ship’s polished wood and brass adding to the charm.

The journey takes you to Walter Peak Station, where a gourmet barbecue dinner awaits. Watching the chef prepare the meal in front of you is a delight, and the food itself is exquisite — a perfect balance of hearty and refined. After dinner, a short farm tour offers a glimpse into rural life before you reboard the TSS Earnslaw for a sing-along by the piano on the return journey. For me, it was a perfect evening — a blend of elegance, tradition, and sheer enjoyment.

The splendour of Milford Sound

Milford Sound is a place that seems untouched by time. Tucked deep within Fiordland National Park, this natural wonder is often described as the "Eighth Wonder of the World" — and rightly so. With its sheer cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and calm, reflective waters, Milford Sound feels like nature at its most majestic.

Find serenity with an overnight cruise on Milford Sound

The best way to experience Milford Sound is from the water, and an overnight cruise aboard the Milford Mariner is nothing short of magical. As the ship glides through the fiord, you’re surrounded by dramatic cliffs rising straight out of the water, their tops often shrouded in mist. Waterfalls tumble from incredible heights, creating a soundtrack that’s as soothing as it is powerful.

For me, the overnight stay was unforgettable. As dusk settled, the silence was profound, broken only by the occasional call of native birds. Watching the stars emerge one by one in the clear night sky, reflected perfectly in the still waters, felt like a moment frozen in time. The next morning, waking up to the sight of Milford Sound bathed in soft light was the perfect finale to this extraordinary experience.

The tranquillity of Te Anau

Te Anau is the peaceful gateway to Fiordland, a place where nature’s beauty feels as endless as the sky. Nestled on the shores of Lake Te Anau, the town offers a serene escape after the grandeur of Milford Sound. With its relaxed atmosphere and breathtaking scenery, it’s the perfect place to unwind and reflect on your journey.

Feel the pull of the Tasman Sea

The adventure begins with a morning cruise out to the Tasman Sea, weather permitting. This journey offers a chance to see the fiord from a new perspective, where the rugged coastline meets the open ocean. The shifting light and mist create a dramatic scene that feels like it’s straight out of a painting.

What I loved most was the sense of remoteness — being out on the water, surrounded by such untamed beauty, was a humbling experience. It’s a reminder of how vast and untouched this part of the world remains, making every moment feel special.

Slow down and savour Te Anau’s peaceful charm

The afternoon is yours to enjoy the quiet charm of Te Anau. Take a stroll along the lake’s edge, where the waters mirror the surrounding mountains, creating a view that feels almost otherworldly. The town itself is welcoming, with cosy cafés and shops offering locally made goods.

When I visited, I found myself drawn to the simple joy of sitting by the lake, watching the gentle ripples and the way the light danced on the water. It’s the kind of place that encourages you to slow down and savour the moment, making it a highlight of any journey through Fiordland.

The heritage and wildlife of Dunedin

Dunedin is a city that wears its Scottish heritage proudly while embracing the wild beauty of the Otago Peninsula. With its historic architecture, vibrant culture, and incredible wildlife, Dunedin offers a unique blend of history and nature. It’s a place where every corner holds a story, and every view takes your breath away.

Celebrate the spirit of Scotland in Dunedin

Dunedin’s Scottish roots come to life during a traditional Scottish evening — a celebration of music, food, and culture. Bagpipes fill the air as the evening begins, setting the tone for a lively and joyous affair. The highlight is the haggis ceremony, a theatrical presentation of Scotland’s iconic dish, accompanied by stories and laughter.

For me, this evening was a heartwarming reminder of the deep cultural connections that weave through Dunedin’s history. The combination of delicious food, rousing music, and spirited company made it an experience I’ll treasure forever.

Encounter history and wildlife at Larnach Castle and Taiaroa Head

A visit to Larnach Castle reveals a world of grandeur and intrigue. Perched on a hill with sweeping views of the Otago Peninsula, this historic castle is steeped in tales of scandal and tragedy. Wandering through its beautifully restored rooms and immaculate gardens, I couldn’t help but feel transported to another time.

Later, a wildlife cruise to Taiaroa Head offers a completely different perspective. As the boat glides along the rugged coastline, you’ll spot fur seals basking on the rocks and albatross soaring above — majestic and effortless in flight. For me, the sight of these incredible creatures in their natural habitat was a highlight, a moment of connection with the wild that felt truly special.
