Today we discover Soweto, one of South Africa’s most historically significant townships. Our journey takes us through the vibrant streets, where we explore key landmarks that played a pivotal role in the country’s struggle for freedom. We begin by visiting the former homes of Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu, two of South Africa’s most revered leaders. Next, we pause at the Hector Pieterson Memorial, a solemn tribute to the young students who lost their lives during the Soweto Uprising of 1976 to reflect on the resilience and bravery of the youth who fought for their rights. Next, we visit the Apartheid Museum, where we spend time delving into the complex and often painful history of apartheid. Through powerful exhibits, testimonies, and archival footage, we gain insight into South Africa's decades-long oppression and the courage that led to its end. Afterward, transfer to O.R. Tambo International Airport for an overnight Carbon Neutral flight back to Sydney.
